Course content

The course consists of 4 independent parts. Part I "Basics of Energy Economics" covers topics like world oil and gas resources, world production and consumption, trade of oil and gas, laws and regulations in the petroleum industry, and the historic overvew of petroleum industry in Norway. Part II "Introduction to Oil and Gas Technologies" deals with chemical and physical properties of oil and gas, the geology of oil and gas (onshore as well as offshore), exploration, drilling and process of refining the raw material. Part III "Oil, Gas and Petroleum Products Flows" deals with the infrastructure of the industry including the different transportation modes, the supply logistics of the industry as well as the inventory management of oil and gas and their derivatives. Part IV "Introduction to Offshore Oil and Gas Logistics" deals with the world oil and gas reserves offshore, historical development of offshore drilling, countries and operators producing (exporting) oil and gas offshore, world trends of offshore activity, management of offshore oil and gas supply chain including land transport, supply bases and supply vessels, their characteristics and common challenges. This part includes excursions and guest lectures from the industry.

Learning outcome

After having completed the course students will know world oil and gas suppliers and consumers, history of petroleum industry, laws and regulations, and trade. They will know the chemical and physical properties of oil and gas, the geology of oil and gas onshore and offshore, exploration, drilling and refining processes. The students will know the petroleum industry supply chain and its infrastructure (oil depots, gas storage facilities, etc.), the supply logistics for drilling, extraction and refinery processing, the inventory management and the transportation of oil and gas and their derivatives in different physical phases by different transportation modes, and general approaches for distribution of petroleum and gas products. They will also know offshore oil and gas producing countries, world trends of offshore activity, challanges and importance of petroleum offshore logistics on the examples of oil and gas companies operating offshore.

Working and learning activities

The course will be a mix of intensive teaching periods (weeks with 3 hours of lectures each day) and ordinary teaching periods (3 hours of lectures per week). There will be weeks without lectures for working on home exams, and weeks with excursions.
