    • Sport and identity
    • Sport and media
    • Sport and development
Learning outcome

Knowledge

Completing this course the students should:

  • know the origin, development and diffusion of modern sports
  • explain how sport has been shaped and moulded by the major political and economic events of the past three centuries
  • know how national and international sport organizations were established, and how policy and power influenced on the development of these organizations.
  • know how to apply historical explanations to issues such as gender, race, social class, identity, media and development in a sport context.

Skills

Completing this course the students should be able to:

  • acquire knowledge of the history of major team sports such as soccer, rugby, basketball, ice hockey, handball and volleyball.
  • do analytical work of a historical phenomenon, both individually and as part of a group.
  • present a historical analysis (both orally and in writing), in an theoretically informed manner.

General qualifications

Completing this course the students should:

  • be able to work independently in analysing a historical problem
  • be able to discuss historical phenomena orally in a group session
  • recognize the qualities and the relevance of historical knowledge as part of understanding cultural expressions like sport of today.

Seminar (36 h) consisting of classroom teaching and active learning working in groups and individually
